外滩
Shanghai's most iconic stretch — a mile of Art Deco colonial buildings facing the Pudong skyline across the Huangpu River. Best at dusk when both sides light up simultaneously. Walk it, then cross the river by the Bund Sightseeing Tunnel or ferry.
豫园
A 400-year-old classical garden surrounded by the Yuyuan Bazaar — stone bridges, pavilions, koi ponds, and the famous Huxinting Teahouse. The contrast between the tranquil garden and the market outside is uniquely Shanghai.
法租界
The most liveable and visually beautiful neighborhood in Shanghai — leafy plane tree-lined streets, Art Deco villas, concept cafes, bookstores, and boutiques. Wander without a plan: the streets around Wulumuqi, Yongkang, and Fuxing roads reward exploration.
陆家嘴
The best vantage point for the Shanghai skyline — three supertall towers (Shanghai Tower, Jin Mao, World Financial Center) clustered together. Take the elevator to the observation deck of Shanghai Tower (the world's second-tallest building) for a 360° view.
田子坊
A maze of converted shikumen (stone gate) alleyways filled with art studios, independent boutiques, craft shops, and cafés. Smaller and more intimate than 798 in Beijing — the architecture is the experience as much as the shops.
小笼包
Shanghai's most iconic bite — thin-skinned steamed dumplings filled with pork and hot broth. Nanxiang (in Yu Garden) is the famous name. Din Tai Fung is consistent and tourist-friendly. For the local experience, find a neighborhood dumpling shop in the French Concession.
本帮菜
Shanghainese cuisine (benbang) is sweet, rich, and braised — lion's head meatballs, hong shao rou (red-braised pork), smoked fish, hairy crab in season. Jesse Restaurant and Fu 1039 are the classic addresses.
上海街头小吃
Scallion pancakes, sheng jian bao (pan-fried pork buns), cong you ban mian (scallion oil noodles), and stinky tofu. The best street food in Shanghai is found in early morning near residential neighborhoods — not tourist zones.
观景餐厅
Some of the most visually dramatic restaurant settings in the world — dinner with the Pudong skyline or Bund façade as a backdrop. Capital M, Ultraviolet, and The Rooftop at Bar Rouge are the main names.
南京路步行街
China's most famous shopping street — department stores, international brands, and specialty shops stretching from the Bund to People's Square. Better for an evening stroll with the neon lights than serious shopping.
新天地
Restored 1920s shikumen houses converted into upscale boutiques, restaurants, and bars. North block is more retail-focused; South block is better for dining and drinking. Premium international and Chinese designer brands.
环贸广场 · K11
Shanghai's two most interesting malls — IAPM is a luxury mall on Huaihai Road that stays open until midnight; K11 integrates contemporary art installations into the retail experience with underground galleries.
外滩天台酒吧
The defining Shanghai nightlife experience — cocktails with the Pudong skyline lit up across the river. Bar Rouge (Bund 18, Level 7), Char Bar (Hotel Indigo Pudong), and Flair Rooftop (Ritz-Carlton Pudong) are the top three.
永康路
A short street in the French Concession that has evolved into Shanghai's best casual drinking strip — outdoor seating spills onto the footpath, drinks are affordable, and the crowd is a mix of locals and expats. Lower-key than the Bund or Jing'an clubs.
爵士 / 现场音乐
Shanghai has one of Asia's strongest jazz scenes, rooted in the 1920s and 30s Big Band era. The Cotton Club (棉花俱乐部), Heyday Jazz Bar, and JZ Club are the main venues for high-quality live jazz without the club atmosphere.
